DESCRIPTION: Since this particular coin is a late die state,
the
design elements are
ill defined. However, fluting line extension
can be seen, into the stylobate, under columns 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10,
11 and 12. Step deviation seen is under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8.
Also seen are trail lines from the designer’s initials, ONE CENT
and AMERICA. Notice the peculiar notching on both termini of
the C in AMERICA. While this is atypical of the notching seen in
a doubled die, it may have led to the confusion of calling this type
anomaly a doubled die. (See photo below).
DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS –
two small die
gouges between the S and the T of
TRUST.
Reverse is LDS – due to the state
of the reverse, no verifiable die
markers could be found.

DESCRIPTION: A very unusual wavy step that shows elements
of
step deviation under
all columns of the Memorial building. There is
a split serif on the C of AMERICA. The coin pictured is a mid die
state and shows weakness in the middle stairs under columns, 5, 6, 7
and 8. Earlier die state coins have
better definition in this area. There
is
also fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 10, 11
and 12, indicated by the stylobate’s levels being bent in a downwards
direction.
Distortion and elongated serifs are seen in both directions
(north and south) on most of the letters in EPU
The word AMERICA shows elongated serifs on the bottom right
corners of those letters and split serifs on the letter C. This is
similar to what is seen on 19995P-1DER-0015WST
Distortion is also seen on the lower part of the O and N of ONE
and the E and N of CENT.
The F of OF and the designer’s initials have short trail lines.
Notice the similarity in the designer’s initials to those that
occurred in die 1994P-1DER-001WST
DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS - light
die
scratching around the BOW TIE.
Reverse is MDS – light die

DESCRIPTION: An unusual die even for a trail die. Ramped
design
extension, with distortion
and faint trails on the letter tops of EPU.
Short, heavy, trail lines on the two Ts and the E of STATES.
Light trail line from the bottom terminus of the last S in STATES.
Ramped design extension with trail lines from the tops of the letters
OF. Notice the extra thickness and blurred appearance of the letters
on the top portion of this die when compared to the sharp, well defined
lettering in ONE. Although it is not unusual for trail and even wavy
step dies to affect only certain parts of the die, it is a bit unusual to
see such a contrast between design
elements. The offset direction
for
the trail lines is 350 degrees.
