DESCRIPTION: A complicated die that shows two different
directions.
While
the EPU, OF, the right upper edge of the cornice and the first A
in AMERICA show a direction of 020º, the designer’s initials, CENT
and ONE show trails in a direction of 180º. Also noted is the column
extension into the stylobate under
columns 10, 11 and 12. This die
was
found by Bil Slaughter of Arkansas.

& 330°
DESCRIPTION: This is an excellent example of a dual direction
trail
die. The die shows movement
not only to the northwest (330º), but also
the reciprocal bearing of 150 degrees. The upper portion of the die tends
to show the northerly lines while the bottom shows the southerly directed
trail lines. It is in the middle of
the die thatboth directional lines are apparent.
Notice that the lines on the EPU are from the top left corners of those letters
affected. The right corner of the roof and cornice on the Memorial Building
show these
dual directional lines, while further down, the designer’s initials
and corner of the base show lines at 150 degrees.
This die was found by Bill Slaughter
of Arkansas.
Both UNITED and STATES show trail lines with a 330 degree
direction. Notice that a trail line intersects the first T of STATES;
this is from
the E in EPU and is in the same direction as t he lines
in STATES.
While the ER of AMERICA show trail lines at 330 degrees, the
C and A show lines to the south. The last A in AMERICA is the only
letter
to show trail lines in both directions. The right
levels of the
stylobate show
some line extensions form the columns and corners
that are an exact match in direction of the lines from the designer’s
initials and base corner. The last area is the
word CENT which also
shows trail lines in a direction of 150 degrees. Although this may
seem to be a complicated die, it is not. More than likely the dual
directions
were caused by a snap back action, with the die first
moving towards the south (causing the 330º
lines) and then snapping
back to the north (causing the 150º lines).
DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS –
die dot above the
E of LIBERTY. Small die gouge to
the left of the DATE.
Reverse is MDS – none noted.
