LINCOLN CENT, 1946-S; IMM-001

I knew that this would catch your eye. What is a 1946-S Lincoln cent doing in the trail dies site? The answer is fairly simple; many people have asked me about this oddity and few have seen one. So, being the founder of this inverted mint mark, here it is.

          1946-S, WITH INVERTED MINT MARK;
       1946-S, IMM-001 (CONECA),
       1946-S, CIMM-001 (CRAWFORD)
       1946-S, WIMM-001 (WEXLER)

If you will notice, the ball serif on this inverted mint mark is upside

down when compared to the correctly positioned mint mark shown

to the right. One of the keys in identifying this oddity is the break in

the upper loop of the S, which in this case is on the bottom. This is

the only reported Lincoln cent die with an inverted mint mark.

                     1946-S WITH BALL SERIF MINT MARK;
                              CONSIDERED SCARCE

                        The mint mark above is correctly positioned. Notice
that the ball serif is on top. This type of mint mark is considered scarce
for this year and is actually a hold over from the previous year, 1945.
