DESCRIPTION: Trails from the interior letters in EPU, the
T
and E of UNTIED and
the TES of STATES. There is also a
small
trail on the E and T of CENT. All trail lines are in an
offset direction of 150 degrees. This die was found by
Bill Slaughter of Arkansas.
One thing that sets this die off from a doubled die is the slight
curvature of the trail lines from the EPU. While the movement
of the die against the hub at the end of hubbing may not be fully
understood, this curvature would not happen if it were a
true doubled die.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate, mushy fluting line extension, into
the
stylobate, under column10.
Light step deviation under columns
4
through 7, with an offset direction of 160 degrees. There is
the possibility that there is step deviation under column 8 in
earlier die states, however, in this LDS condition, die scratches
in that area make it hard to confirm. There are also slight
indications of trails on the second T of states, the M of UNUM
and the E of CENT.
Small short trail lines are seen from the second T os STATES.
A cross over trail is seen on the E.
Slight indications of trails, along with some distortion on the bottom
of some of the letters in EPU are seen.
Since
this coin is LDS the intensity of the trail lines may have
been
adversley affected. EDS and MDS coins will more than l
ikely
have sharper and more easily seen trail lines from
affected
design elemnets.
A faint trail line is seen on the C of AMERICA. Another cross
over trail line is seen on the E of CENT and a trail line is
detected on the bottom of the N.

diagonal gouge
next to the left side of the L in

DESCRIPTION: A complicated “trail” die with
lines in two offset
directions;
140 and 310 degrees. The 140 degree lines are
indicated by the red arrows and the 310 degree lines are
indicated by the green arrows. The mushy appearance of
the trail lines is due to the later die state of the coin, however,
earlier die states of this die should show sharp lines and
possible more trails. This die was found by Bob
Piazza of Florida.
The top of the letters in UNI of UNITED show “trails” at 310
degrees
while the ED of UNITED
show “trails” at 140 degrees. Also note the
“trails” from the cornice and roof tips at 310 degrees.
The first S in STATES is the only design element to have “trails”
in
both directions. The
right base tip of the Memorial building shows
a “trail” with a direction of 140 degrees.
The C, N and T of CENT also show “trails” in the 140 degree
direction. Exactly why this die has two different directional
“trails” is uncertain, but we can surmise that there was movement
of the die, during the hubbing process,
in different directions.

DESCRIPTION: While not a strong trail die, it is however
a nice
one. Most of the letters
in EPU have trail lines from the top left
of the letters affected. The columns from # 2 to 7 have trail lines
from the top left corners. The last S in States has a trail line from
its bottom terminus. The right post has a trail line from its top.
The two Ts in STATES have small humps on top of the horizontal
bars as do the E and D of UNITED, pictured below. The offset
direction for these trail lines is 330 degrees.
