DESCRIPTION: A massive “trail” die that shows distortion to just
about every design element on the reverse
except for the word
ONE. Lincoln’s
statue is decidedly lopsided as is the right URN,
looking more like Liberty’s torch than anything else. Even the
designer’s initials are distorted into configuration. The scroll on
the left cornice resembles the lower
jaw of a shark; with teeth
pointed
inward. The offset direction of the all the trails is 040
degrees. The last picture, just above, shows a magnified trail
line from the bottom of the T in CENT. Notice that it is not straight,
but squiggles a bit and broadens near its end. This is just another
factor that supports this type of anomaly as being a design extension
and not design duplication. The in hand analysis of this die was
on a poor quality coin that had suffered environmental damage.
One of
better quality may show sharper trails.

DESCRIPTION: Letter distortion, typical with trail dies, is seen on
EPU, TED of UNITED and TES of STATES. Short, thick line
extensions from the top of the columns can be seen with an offset
direction of 330º. The left Urn also shows the affects of some
extension as do the steps, with their mushy appearance. The
statue of Lincoln also suffers from this distortion as he appears
to be looking down and to the left. This could be classified as
a reverse wavy step.
DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is EMDS –
die crack from
just above Lincoln’s ear up into
the
W of WE. Long die scratch
through the L of LIBERTY. Long
die
scratch from the bottom of the
S in TRUST into the field.
Reverse is EMDS – none observed.

Surprisingly, a second set of trails is also found on this die. Faint trail
lines are seen from the E, the L and

M of UNUM. There is also a trail line seen on the top of the left
URN. The offset direction of the second set of trails is 060 degrees.

DESCRIPTION: This is a dual directional trail die with trail
lines
in reciprocal directions.
Moderate trail lines are seen on the word
STATES with distorted notching seen on the right side upper
termini. Moderate trails also seen on the word CENT and on
the designer’s initials. Notice the trails from the E and N of CENT
and the first S of STATES have trail lines in both directions. Also
noted are trail lines from the E and N of UNUM in a direction of
240 degrees, along with the E and D of UNITED. The Lincoln
statue on the reverse also suffers from distortion, giving it a clown
like appearance with large, elongated head, an unusual tie and
balloon like knees and legs. This distortion may or may not be a
direct cause from trails; however, it has been encountered on the
other die that has been examined.
DIE MAKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS –
none noted.
Reverse is MDS – die break in the
upper part of bay 1. Small die
chip in the middle of column 2.
Lincoln’s statue has two indented
lines enclosing a slightly raised
area from the top
of his head.
The exact cause is unknown.
