DESCRIPTION: This is a dual directional trail die. The first and most prominent set of trail lines are seen from the motto EPU, the word STATES, the word AMERICA, the cornice, the right top corner of all the columns, the right corner of the Memorial building roof, Lincoln’s statue, the top right corners of both URNS, the right corners of the stylobate and the letter T of CENT. This set has an offset direction of 040º. The second set of trail lines is seen from the E of ONE. This set has an offset direction of 130º. This die is considered a major trail die.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – small die dots are seen in the field in front of Lincoln’s face.

Reverse is MDS – a small die scratch is seen above the left side of the U in UNITED. A heavy die scratch is seen from the right side of the T in CENT. This is not to be confused with a trail line.

1996P-1DER-042T                               080°, 260°

DESCRIPTION: This is a dual directional trail die. Trail lines can be seen from the words UNITED STATES, the motto EPU, the NE of ONE and the word CENT. The directions for this die are 080º and 260º.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – none noted

Reverse is LDS – a large struck through a foreign object is seen in the upper part of bays 5, 6 and 7.

1996P-1DER-043T                   240°, 270°, 350°

DESCRIPTION: Three sets of trail lines are seen on the reverse of this 1996-P Lincoln cent. The first set (yellow arrows) affects mostly the motto EPU, the ES of STATES, the word OF, the ER of AMERICA, the NE of ONE and the tops of the right side columns. These trails have an offset of 350°.

The second set (green arrows) can also be seen on the motto EPU, the first S of STATES, the left corner of the stylobates, the NE of ONE and the ET of CENT. This set has an offset direction of 270°.

The third set (red arrows) can be seen on the first S of STATES, the beginning of the motto EPU, the NE of ONE and the EN of CENT. This set has an offset direction of 240°.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen in the field below the last T of TRUST.

Reverse is MDS – a die clash is seen (blue arrow) in bay 4.

1996P-1DER-044T                  250° & 116°

DESCRIPTION: Two sets of trail lines are seen on the reverse of this 1996-P Lincoln cent. The first set (green arrows) affects AME of AMERICA with an offset of 250°. The second set (red arrows) affects MERICA, toward the rims, with an offset of 116°

DIE MARKERS: (Black arrows)

Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – numerous gouges around IN; several gouges around the date. Small gouge inside ear.

Reverse is MDS – at this stage, there are deep die scrapes from the feeder finger in the NW quadrant into the memorial. It’s possible earlier or later stages do not have the scrapes. This die is similar to 028T & 032T.
