1997P – 1DEO; 001 – 010 Files

1997P-1DEO-001T                           000°,270°

DESCRIPTION: One of the more unusual trail dies that affects all of LIBERTY. Notice the extreme extra thickness on the east west axis. One oddity is the indent where the extra thickness ends. This may have been caused by a buildup of metal from when the die scraped across the hub face.

Also notice the spikes on the letters LIBER, which indicate some movement to the north as well. There is some indicators of trails on IN GOD, however, they are faint and do not have a set direction.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die gouge in the loop of the second 9 in the DATE. Oddly enough, the date looks normal in comparison to LIBERTY

Reverse is LDS – large die crack from the top of column 8, through EPU and the O in OF up into the rim.

1997P-1DEO-002T                                      120°

DESCRIPTION: Trails can be seen from the RTY of LIBERTY and the entire date. The offset direction is 110 degrees. Unfortunately, this coin suffers from environmental damage and it is stained throughout much of its surfaces.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – die gouge from the G of GOD down to Lincoln’s hair line. A small die gouge is over the V of VDB.

Reverse is EDS – none noted.

1997P-1DEO-003T                                     030°

DESCRIPTION: Moderate trail lines are seen from the tops of the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Heavy flow lines are also seen from the letters and may have been caused by the scoring of the die and exasperated by metal flow. The offset direction is 030 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is LMDS – a die crack, following the back of Lincoln’s head, intersects WE on its way to the rim. A die chip is seen on top of the forward hairline.

Reverse is LMDS – a die gouge is seen next to the right leg of the last A in AMERICA.

NOTE: This die was found by Louis Schaeffer.

1997P-1DEO-004T                          160°, 340°

DESCRIPTION: Two sets if trail lines are seen from the word TRUST and WE. The first set, from the tops, of the letters has an offset direction of 340 degrees. The second set, seen on the bottom of the R in TRUST and the 7 digit in the date, has an offset direction of 160 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – a die dot is seen below the B in LIBERTY.

Reverse is MDS – a die dot is seen on the left side of column 1. Two die gouges are seen between the fight cornice edge and the C in AMERICA.

 1997P-1DEO-005T                          160°,320°

DESCRIPTION: This is a dual directional trail die. The first set has an offset direction of 160 degrees with trail lines from the N of IN and the GD of GOD. Also seen are trail lines from the RTY of LIBERTY. The next set of trail lines is the reciprocal of the first set and is 320 degrees. These lines can be seen on the Y of LIBERTY, the 1 of the date and the RUS of TRUST. The trail lines are not to be confused with die deterioration lines seen from the letters on IN GOD and indicated by black arrows.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “D “, obverse is VLDS – none noted.

Reverse is VLDS – die clashes are seen in bays 4 and 10. It is obvious that the obverse die was changed out early in the mating of this pair of dies since the obverse die shows no signs of abrading.

NOTE: This die was found by Aisha Shahid.
