DESCRIPTION: Strong fluting line extension under column 3 with a moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under column 2. Moderate to light step deviation under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8 with an offset direction of 200 degrees. Also noted are the trail lines from the TAT of STATES and the E of EPU.

Reverse is MDS – die clash in bay 3. Die gouge on the right base tip.

Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none noted

DESCRIPTION: Light to moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2 and 3. Light step deviation is seen under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8, with an offset direction of 200 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “D”, obverse is VLDS – die crack from Lincoln’s head, through the W of WE and onto the rim.

Reverse is VLDS – die dots in and around the EPU.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2 and 3. Light to moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8 with emphasis on the left side.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “D”, obverse is VLDS – die gouge over the last 9 digit in the DATE.

Reverse is MDS – die chip on the left cornice edge. Die chip with die crack in column 2. Die gouge under right base line.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under column 3. Light step deviation under columns 5 through 7, with an offset direction of 190 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none noted

Reverse is MDS – die gouge above the right cornice corner. Die dot to the right of the top of column 12.

Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die crack from Lincoln’s eyebrow, through the forehead and up into the hair.

Reverse is LDS – die gouges are still present.

DESCRIPTION: This is one trail die that can easily be missed if the lighting is not correct when viewed. Trail lines are seen from the two Ts and the last s of STATES, all the top left corners of the letters in EPU, the left tops of the center columns and some of the scrolling in the cornice. The offset direction is 330º.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die crack from Lincoln’s eye, up through his hair and into the field above his head.

Reverse is MDS – small die gouge under the diagonal bar of the N in ONE.

NOTE: This die was found by Joseph Koelling of North Carolina.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2, 3, 10, 11 and 12. Strong to moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8.

DIE MARKERS:  Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – none observed.

Reverse is EDS – small die gouge on top of the diagonal bar of the N in ONE. Die gouge under the N in ONE. Die dot under the right base line.

DESCRIPTION: Strong to moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2, 3, 11 and 12. Strong to moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8, with an offset direction of 200 degrees. Notice the trails from the designer’s initials.

Also noted are the faint trails from the letter T in CENT and the F of the designer’s initial.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – none observed

Reverse is EDS – start of a die chip on the left cornice edge. Die dot under the I of UNITED. Die dot above the left base tip.

Stage “B”, obverse is EMDS – die chip in the upper loop of the B in LIBERTY.

Reverse is EMDS – same as Stage “A”

DESCRIPTION: Light trail lines are seen from the letters in EPU. The offset direction is 340 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – none noted

Reverse is EDS – none noted

Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – a series of small die gouges over the IB of LIBERTY.

Reverse is LDS – large die chip, in the early stages of forming, on column # 2.
