DESCRIPTION: Design element extension, seen as trails on the left corners of the letters in LIBERTY, extra thickness is seen on the ERTY of LIBERTY, the digits of the date and the letters of TRUST. Also affected are Lincoln’s beard and bow tie. Notice the single trail from the last T in TRUST and the letter distortion on the R of LIBERTY.  The offset direction is 350 degrees.

The above photos show the extra, ramped thickness.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none observed

Reverse is MDS – die gouge to the left of the O in ONE. Die gouge on the left side of the vertical of the E in ONE. Die crack on the top of column 2.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate trails from the digits of the date and Lincoln’s bow tie and the LIBE of LIBERTY. The offset direction is 350 degrees.

NOTE:  An example has been found with a different reverse die used.  A marker photo from that second reverse is shown.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, Obverse is MDS – die gouge under the right side of the N in the word IN.

Reverse is MDS – Light die scratches under UNUM.  This reverse has a minor DDR (Extra column bar) on column 6.

Stage “C” – REVERSE DIE CHANGED:  Small die gouge between the middle of the N in ONE and the rim.  This die is EMDS.

NOTE: This die was discovered by Bob Piazza of Florida.

DESCRIPTION: Mushy, moderate trail lines are seen from the right top corners of the letters in LIBERTY. Also seen is ramped extra thickness on the date. The offset direction is 030 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen on the right side of the R of TRUST. Another die gouge is seen next to the rim above the S of TRUST.

Reverse is LDS – two small die gouges are seen between the A and T of STATES.

NOTE: This die was found by Chris Buess of Indiana.

DESCRIPTION:  Moderate trail lines are seen from the top right corners of the letters in LIBERTY. Also noted is the trail line from the G of GOD. Extra thickness is seen on the word LIBERTY and the date. The offset direction of all the trail lines is 020 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – three die gouges are seen around the ER of LIBERTY, one below and two above the ER.

Reverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen below the E of EPU.

DESCRIPTION: Light trail lines are seen from the date. Note the extra thickness on the digits. The offset direction is 010 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen in the front corner of Lincoln’s eye.

Reverse is LDS – a small die gouge is seen to the top right of the A in STATES.

DESCRIPTION: Trail lines are seen from the bottom of the letters in LIBERTY. The offset direction is 190°

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C “, obverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen in the bottom portion of Lincoln’s lapel. Another die gouge is seen to the left of the S of TRUST.

Reverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen above the O of ONE. A series of small die gouges is seen to the right of the designer’s initials.

DESCRIPTION: Trail lines are seen from the bottom left corners of the letters in LIBERTY and the numerals in the dat. The offset direction is 220 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B “, obverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen above the VDB.

Reverse is MDS – two die gouges are seen in the O of ONE.

DESCRIPTION: Faint trail lines are seen from the right top corners of the letters in LIBERTY. This is a LDS die and more defined trail lines may be seen in earlier die states. The offset direction is 030°

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C “, obverse is LDS – die dots are seen above and below the E of LIBERTY. A small die gouge is seen above the4 digit. Die damage is seen just below the 4 digits cross bar.

Reverse is LDS – A small die dot is seen below the P of PLURIBUS. Die damage is seen to the right of the middle cross bar of the E in ONE.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B “, obverse is MDS – small die gouges are seen in and around the date. A group of small die gouges is seen below and to the right of the last T in TRUST.

Reverse is MDS – a group of small die gouges is seen in and around the N of ONE. A group of small die gouges is seen in and around the T of CENT.
