DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2 and 3, with strong, multi fluting line extension under columns 10, 11 and 12. There is also some extension of the corners, designer’s initials and the blocks under the right side shrubs. Strong step deviation with multi line extension into the stairs below columns 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The MDS and LDS show little difference in the intensity of this very strong trail die.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – small die gouge in the loop of the second 9 of the DATE. Die damage below the second 9.

Reverse is MDS – none noted

Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die gouge in the loop of the first 9 has faded. Large die chip is seen in the upper loop of the second 9.

Reverse is LDS – none noted.

NOTES: A definite major die. This is the first wavy step die to be reported. Originally attributed in 1995 by John Wexler and then again, in 2000, by Ken Potter.

 

1994P-1DER-002WST                             200º

DESCRIPTION: Strong fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 1, 2 and 3. Strong step deviation under columns 5 through 9, with an offset direction of 200 degrees. Some steps deviation is seen under the left post (urn). There are also trail from the bottom of the letters in the EPU, in the same direction as the wavy steps.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die gouge just below the U of TRUST.

Reverse is MDS – die scratching from the left base tip down to the O of ONE.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under column 3. Strong to moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8, with an offset direction of 190 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none observed

Reverse is LDS – die gouges on the bottom of the E in ONE.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns # 2, 3, 10 and 11. Moderate step deviation is seen under columns # 5 through 8 with an offset direction of 180 degrees.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate to strong fluting line extension, into the stylobate under columns 1, 2, 3, 11 and 12. Strong step deviation under columns 5 through 8. Also noted is some corner extension into the left stylobate, along with extension from the left URN. These pictures are of Stage “B”.

Stage “C” has a large retained die break in the middle of the stairs.


Stage “C” has a large retained die break in the middle of the stairs. While there is a little bit of fade between the Stage “B”  (MDS) and the Stage “C” (LDS), the trail lines from the bottom of the letters in the EPU and the periods remain fairly constant and moderately strong.

DIE MAKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS. Die gouge under IN.

Reverse is MDS – die gouge in the bottom of bay 1. Small die gouge to the right of the designers initials

Stage “C”, obverse is LDS.

Reverse is TERMINAL. Retained die break (II-E-6) is seen in the stairs.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8.

                                                             STAGE “D”

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die gouge next to rim above the L of LIBERTY.

Reverse is LDS – bent die face between the T of CENT and the right base tip of the Memorial building.

Stage “D”, obverse is VLDS – die crack in Lincoln’s head.

Reverse is VLDS – same as LDS.

DESCRIPTION: Strong to moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2 and 3. Strong to moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5 through 8, with an offset direction of 200 degrees.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die gouge above the B of LIBERTY.

Reverse is LDS – retained die crack between the U and M of UNUM.

DESCRIPTION: Moderate fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under column 3 with light step deviation.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – small die gouge over the second 9 of the DATE. Die gouge high above LIBERTY.

DESCRIPTION: Light fluting line extension is seen into the stylobate under columns 2 and 3. Moderate step deviation is seen under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8. The emphasis on this die is to the left.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none noted.

Reverse is LDS – two die cracks between the U and M of UNUM. Small die dot to the right of the designer’s initials.

DESCRIPTION: Light, multiple fluting line extension, into the stylobate, under columns 2 and 3. Moderate step deviation is seen under columns 4, 5, 6 and 7 with light step deviation under column 8.

DIE MARKERS: Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – two small die gouges above the E in LIBERTY.

Reverse is MDS – small die gouges in the O of ONE.
